A few days ago, the Faroese newspaper Dimmalætting ran an article. Headline: “Mykines is drowning in tourists”. In the article, local tourism operators say that the ever-increasing number of tourists to the island is putting the terrain and the birdlife at risk. The problem is not a new one. People have been talking about it for years. The islands and tourism. In the spotlight once again: Mykines. I wonder why they don't just let fewer ferry boats go to Mykines. It used to be one tour a day during the season. Now there are two. The islands quickly need to decide what sort of and how much tourism they want. Otherwise, nature and islanders will suffer badly. Paths slip because too many people walk over them. Where there used to be a simple grass path, now there is asphalt - and bulky railings. It's time to take action. If we do not pay attention, the magic of the place will eventually be gone. The islands are not Disneyland, but habitat for animals, plants and people.
