The Faroese Love To Celebrate. In Their Own Way

Mazuhn July 29, 2022

"The Faroese are People of singers and storytellers. And they love to celebrate. In their own way". That's what I say in my book „Meine wilden Inseln“ (published in German so far, by publishing house Piper Malik). An entire chapter describes how the Faroese celebrate, with whom, where, how and why. Like: Ólavsøka. And that is today …

Slow Fashion In Tórshavn: Sissal Of Shisa Brand

Mazuhn July 5, 2019

Ullvøruhúsið, the old “Yarn and wool-ware house“. 101 years ago, people walked through the same door, a moody door with a mixture of great looks and charming stiffness. A year ago, the wool-ware house reopened, as the home of the Faroese fashion brands Steinum and Shisa Brand, pronounced like: She’s a brand. Slow fashion in Tórshavn …

Weekend Review: The Spirit Of Ólavsøka

Mazuhn July 30, 2017

National holiday, two-day celebration of Ólavsøka, weekend review. Back from Tórshavn, late coffee on a quiet Sunday in our village, recalling this year’s Ólavsøka favorites. Like: Sitting at the meeting place Trappan í Vágsbotni close to the harbor with the fall of darkness, area packed with people, meanwhile someone behind me spills his drink …

Meet Guðrið Højgaard, Director of Visit Faroe Islands

Mazuhn March 23, 2017

A row of colorful houses in Tórshavn, next to the Prime Minister’s office on Tinganes and the scenic harbor. One house: White front, blue logo, lettering. Boats bobbing on the water while I get closer. Inside: Climbing narrow stairs up to the office of Guðrið Højgaard, director of Visit Faroe Islands …

Nightcap on Norröna

Mazuhn March 7, 2017

I saw the twinkling silhouette of Tórshavn embracing a shadow ship harbor under a black velvet sky. Nightcap on Norröna. As I was promenading on the deserted upper decks, a sea breeze sprang up. Inside: Dim light staging the ferry’s evening gown. The belle of the ball, ready for another waltz across the ocean …

The poetic architecture of Eyðun Eliasen

Mazuhn December 5, 2016

To my mind, that’s exactly what makes Eyðun’s architecture so special: its poetic diction. The house Eyðun has designed for himself and his family is overlooking much of the Faroese capital Tórshavn. A project that, from the very beginning, forced him to deal with much more than cardinal directions, floor plans, material selection and cost control. Step inside …
