Gleðilig Jól! Merry Christmas! May Your Heart Be Light

Mazuhn December 22, 2018

After the storm. Heavy rain, gusts of wind dashing against house walls, sea spray speeding across the surface of the water – passing into oblivion. Days flew past, Christmas cards arriving, Advent decoration, candle arches and tea lights in windows. King of holiday lights and everybody’s darling: our village Christmas tree …

Preserving History: Uppi í Beiti. The Old House in Viðareiði

Mazuhn October 14, 2018

“You are looking for Sverri? Down there, that’s his house. Park your car in my driveway and follow the narrow path. That’s the shortest way.“ No sooner said than done. The second I walk towards the back of the old house, I know that something doesn’t add up – for whatever reason. Soon, I’ll find out …

Abandon Ship! The 1707 New Year's Eve Drama of Lambavík

Mazuhn October 24, 2017

A walk in Lamba, lost in thought. On New Year’s Eve 1707, the Danish ship Norske Løve sank close to the village, after having been blown off course on its way to India. Just a few steps from here, the Norske Løve was driven onto Eysturoy's rocky shore and relentlessly dashed to pieces …

Today: Here’s what you’re missing

Mazuhn February 7, 2017

Our village today. Severe nighttime storm: over, replaced by picture-book weather. Activity since arrival on the islands: Driving from our village to Runavík, four times inside two days. Reason: an annoying internet router, stubbornly refusing to do its work. The good news: Everything is back to normal. Bonus pack: fantastic weather …

Season’s Greetings. Heartbroken

Mazuhn December 20, 2016

The church of Elduvík and My Faroe Islands’ Season’s Greetings. As for me, I find it extremely difficult to choose the right words this year. Initially, I wanted to tell you a story about Faroese Christmas trees. Solid, resilient and vigorous, fearlessly braving the weather. That was before a truck crashed into a Christmas market in Berlin …

Saksun: A Symphony of Colors

Mazuhn October 28, 2016

Imagine a beautiful winding road that leads through a picturesque valley. This it what you see at the road’s end: Saksun, a place in the northwestern part of Streymoy. In the autumn, Saksun’s 50 Shades of Green turn into a Symphony of Brown and Red. At low tide, you can take a walk up to the waterfront. A scenery of surreal beauty …

A Lifestyle Is In Danger

Mazuhn September 10, 2015

In several churches in the Faroe Islands, including Tjørnuvík, Hvannasund and Sandavágur, money has been stolen out of collection boxes. The cases of theft took place in recent weeks. No big deal? Wrong. Incidents like this can change a whole lifestyle. I haven’t met all inhabitants of the Faroes, but I met many. So, what exactly is Faroese lifestyle about? …
