Boat: Jósup, ferry 36 Sørvágur - Mykines. Sailing time: approximately 45 minutes. Mykines, the westernmost island of the Faroes. About 10 square kilometers. Population (January 2017): 14. Truly a special island. Kittiwakes, gannets, great skuas, fulmars, oystercatchers, whimbrels and puffins: Mykines is famous for its rich birdlife during the summer months.
Take a look at my pictures and get a taste of the island. Also notice that some changes might take place on Mykines soon. On the news recently: talks and controversies about i.a. a fee that’s supposed to be charged with the beginning of this year’s summer season, to all those who want to walk the outfields (adults 100 DKK, kids older than six 50 DKK). Also being discussed: people walking in groups and with authorized tour guides, in order to protect Mykines' nature.
With one of my recent blog posts I have already told you that growth in tourism has led to political considerations and discussions around the Faroe Islands. So, regarding Mykines, and even at the risk of sounding like a smart aleck: Stay on the marked footpath. Never ever step onto the puffins’ breeding grounds. That goes without saying? Even better. I still remember the one I couldn’t talk out of doing it, though. A dog. Glad his owner did.
