Colorful houses clinging to a gently ascending slope, scenery muffled up in bright winter light. On Nólsoy that day, both village and island. 10 square kilometers, 221 inhabitants, popular place among Faroese and within easy reach, since located 5 km east of the capital Tórshavn only. You can either swim (competitive sportsman version) or take the ferry (common people option). The ride takes 20 minutes.
Docking maneuver in the little harbor, disembarkation. Clear air, streets deserted, gras blades wearing shades of brown, yellow and dark green, the recently restored and repainted whalebone arch (originally put up in 1907) down by the quay. My picture shows the village of Nólsoy as seen from the south side. Actually, we had intended to go on a hike (lighthouse Borðan direction), but winter weather spoiled our plans, like already the very first hillside outside the village being completely covered with ice. Time to turn around and realize: Better safe than sorry. There’s always tomorrow.
