Inseparable. The Islands and The Artist: Annika Á Lofti

Mazuhn September 6, 2017

Radiant smile, wind in her hair and that certain something. An afternoon with the Faroese artist Annika á Lofti. Coffee klatsch and gorge walk, pleasant and intense. Soon, we talk about the big questions, as for instance: knowing who you are and where you belong. Annika, born in 1983 in Tórshavn, raised in Sandavágur on the island Vágar …

The Late Light Show

Mazuhn August 24, 2017

Summer’s almost over, nights are dark again. Time to monitor skies in the evenings, since I don’t want to miss one single Late Light Show. In the course of this week, I was lucky enough to catch some Northern Lights flickering above our bay. Shortly after, I captured another scene …

Sonny Johannesen: The Skipper and the Photo From The Past

Mazuhn August 11, 2017

Greenland. A stormy night in January 1968, close to Nuuk. Wind-whipped waves, minus 20 degrees Celsius. Five German fishermen in a tender, trying to row from one trawler to another. A hopeless endeavor. „They ended up drifting along the Nuuk fjord, so we took them in“, Sonny Johannesen tells me …

From Up Close: A Lazy Puffin Day

Mazuhn August 7, 2017

Lying in lush green grass on Mykines, thinking about the amazing creatures in front of me. Puffins. Spending eight months out at sea. Wing beat up to 400 times per minute, chasing their prey down to a depth of 60 meters, using their wide, orange-colored, funny feet as rudder. Compact and small body; yet it can speed up to 90 kilometers per hour …

Weekend Review: The Spirit Of Ólavsøka

Mazuhn July 30, 2017

National holiday, two-day celebration of Ólavsøka, weekend review. Back from Tórshavn, late coffee on a quiet Sunday in our village, recalling this year’s Ólavsøka favorites. Like: Sitting at the meeting place Trappan í Vágsbotni close to the harbor with the fall of darkness, area packed with people, meanwhile someone behind me spills his drink …

Visiting Malan Jógvansdóttir, Probably In Gjógv's Oldest House

Mazuhn July 17, 2017

Arriving at Gjógv, picture-book village in the northeast of Eysturoy, named after and famous for its 200-meter seawater-fed gorge. Sweeping, that gorge. But irrelevant at the present moment. Today, we go for a hidden treasure. A private home. Jógvansstova, said to be Gjógv’s oldest house …
