OKKARA: Craft Brewery About To Reach Break-Even Point

Mazuhn June 25, 2018

Welcome to the world of OKKARA, the smaller one of the two Faroese breweries. Faroese for beer: øl and bjór. Why am I telling you this? Because it’s Petur Petersen who is giving me a tour. Nickname: Petur Øl. Job description: Ølstjóri. Beer CEO. The face of OKKARA …

Eiðisvatn “Picture Puzzle” & The Out Of The Ordinary Pieces

Mazuhn March 14, 2018

Snowcapped mountains, winding road, ice-blue water. Eiðisvatn and surroundings. The usual setting, according to Faroese standards? Absolutely not. Encircling the out of the ordinary pieces of a picture looked upon as puzzle. Solving of the case, step-by-step. Image foreground: Hairpin bend. Background: …

Sonny Johannesen: The Skipper and the Photo From The Past

Mazuhn August 11, 2017

Greenland. A stormy night in January 1968, close to Nuuk. Wind-whipped waves, minus 20 degrees Celsius. Five German fishermen in a tender, trying to row from one trawler to another. A hopeless endeavor. „They ended up drifting along the Nuuk fjord, so we took them in“, Sonny Johannesen tells me …

Meet Guðrið Højgaard, Director of Visit Faroe Islands

Mazuhn March 23, 2017

A row of colorful houses in Tórshavn, next to the Prime Minister’s office on Tinganes and the scenic harbor. One house: White front, blue logo, lettering. Boats bobbing on the water while I get closer. Inside: Climbing narrow stairs up to the office of Guðrið Højgaard, director of Visit Faroe Islands …

The poetic architecture of Eyðun Eliasen

Mazuhn December 5, 2016

To my mind, that’s exactly what makes Eyðun’s architecture so special: its poetic diction. The house Eyðun has designed for himself and his family is overlooking much of the Faroese capital Tórshavn. A project that, from the very beginning, forced him to deal with much more than cardinal directions, floor plans, material selection and cost control. Step inside …

Harvesting cultivated seaweed with Ocean Rainforest

Mazuhn September 12, 2016

Excited. Wearing my rain gear and a working helmet. The boat Tongul is on its way from Funningsfjørður harbor to the aquaculture site north of the village of Funningur. A huge cultivation rig for seaweed. The work of Ocean Rainforest, a company engaged in the production of marine biomass from macroalgae in open ocean cultivation installations …

Fishing with Steintór: Angry langoustines and Kalsoy's cliffs

Mazuhn June 1, 2016

Are you ready for angry langoustines and Kalsoy’s fantastic cliffs? Dress code: Rubber boots, rubber pants and work gloves. In the harbor of Funningsfjørður, I meet Steintór Debes (55). We get some boxes out of his van, board his vessel M/B Irdi and put out to sea. Which, in our case, means: we are on our way to Steintór’s buoys …
